These U.S. States Produced The Most Athletes For The 2014 Winter Olympic Games In Sochi

There are 230 U.S. athletes at the Winter Olympics this year. Each of them coming from different states around the country. The map below shows how many athletes each state produced. 

The most interesting thing you'll see is an anecdotal correlation between weather, and population. For example, California produced 20 athletes but it is the most populated state in the country.

On the other hand, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, and Michigan each produced nearly as many athletes as California but are far less populated. Each of these states, however, have much colder winters compared to California and so more athletes were most likely exposed to better winter sport conditions.
